Dear Marylou: You have written about next spring's revivals of the 1920s. Are bias-cut gowns part of the remix? -- A.S., Staten Island, N.Y.

Dear A.S.: Yes! The evening dress in Marc Audibet's illustration is a bias-cut example from his time as Vionnet's designer. Madeleine Vionnet, who died in 1975, invented the bias cut -- fabric cut on the diagonal to the grain of the cloth, thereby enabling it to cling to the body while moving with the wearer. Until that time, most clothes were shaped by infrastructures that included boning and all sorts of corsetry.

Several designers have carried on her legacy, including the current Vionnet designers, Barbara and Lucia Croce.

The dress by Audibet, who has worked for Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo and is now on his own, is a masterpiece of geometric placement at the bodice and hips that allows the fabric to ease over the body into a short train.

Dear Marylou: What do you see as the most functional clothes ahead -- fashion-functional, that is. -- E.N., Cleveland

Dear E.N.: Of all the name designers, New York's Narciso Rodriguez showed the most creative double-duty clothes in his pre-fall collection for 2012. For example, he offers reversible coats with detachable fox-fur sleeves. As he explained: "I like things that are functional." (I say that function is also an unction for most women, and I predict he will have great success with these designs.)

Dear Marylou: With stores now pulsating with color and prints, I find it difficult to find neutral shades. To me, those two elements make clothes too memorable, and therefore short-lived. They also seem to evoke comments such as "That's so-and-so's purple dress" or "That's her geometric coat." Please comment. -- T.J.J., Newark, N.J.

Dear T.J.J.: I believe customers are attracted to color but don't always buy it. That said, in Texas and Florida and in Southern California, color sells measurably more than in cities like New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. I think it has to do with the weather. Hot weather, hot colors.

Simon Doonan, Barneys New York's creative ambassador, has another take on color and the reason that less is more right now. As he opined in Slate, the top 1 percenters have adopted a nondescript way of dressing. "It's spare simplicity with fancy labels. It's a white gold Rolex that resembles a plain old tin Timex. It's L.L. Bean-style basics with haute-couture prices. This breathy, low-key mode of camouflage is described by its proponents as 'quiet luxury,' " Doonan said.

He went on to point out that the new sect he calls "The Quiet Luxurians" was exemplified by a woman he watched boarding a plane. "To the untrained eye, her sensible and discreetly accessorized slacks 'n' sweater ensemble rendered her all but invisible," he said. "Her monochromatic, tawny, fawny outfit was severely ascetic and suggested a raging antipathy toward self-indulgent glamour. And yet my estimate of the total cost of her outfit, including a T. Anthony nylon tote, Hermes purse, Tod's drivers and gold bangle? A quiet 25 grand."

If Doonan is right in psyching out trends -- and he usually is -- this could well be a moment for the beige and grays you seek in fashion's new neutral zone.

Dear Marylou: I'm appalled by the prices of alligator or crocodile belts -- the ones fashion magazines say are among the tippy-top trends of the season. Can you recommend a good imitation? -- E.P., Denver

Dear E.P.: Before you go to mock croc, try men's shops and men's departments in department stores, where real alligator belts are priced far below those of women's alligator belts. And don't worry too much if you have to buy a couple of sizes larger than your waistline requires. It's fashionable now to let the end of your belt dangle below your waist. If the dangling belt doesn't look right for your needs, ask the people at any shoe repair shop to cut your belt.

Resté secret pendant presque 100 ans, enfin accessible à tous, dans son format original, le Livre Rouge est un grand livre calligraphié, enluminé et illustré, de la main de Jung. De 1913 à 1930, Jung a travaillé à ce livre, qui est la matrice de son œuvre future. Il lui a fallu d’innombrables heures de travail pour écrire le texte original, le recopier à l’encre de Chine, en écriture gothique, l’enluminer de lettrines et de cabochons, insérer entre les pages des gouaches.

Avant cette publication, à peine une vingtaine de personnes au monde, en près d’un siècle, avaient posé les yeux sur les pages intérieures du Livre Rouge de Jung !

Dans l’histoire de l’antiquité on retient que la Macédoine est le pays natal d’Alexandre le Grand et c’est à peu près tout. L’exposition qui se déroule actuellement au Louvre nous démontre que ce pays joua un rôle de tout premier plan et que sa richesse artistique n’a rien à envier à celle de la Grèce. Avec près de cinq cents objets, pour la plupart jamais présentés en France, nous revivons l’histoire de la Macédoine antique depuis le XVe siècle avant notre ère jusqu’à l'époque romaine impériale. Il a fallu attendre 1977 et la mise au jour à Vergina de plusieurs sépultures royales, parmi lesquelles celle, intacte, de Philippe II, père d’Alexandre le Grand, pour l’on prenne conscience du potentiel archéologique exceptionnel de la Macédoine. Ces fouilles ont révélé le faste d’une classe de notables et d’une élite proche des rois, ainsi que l’élaboration d’un art de cour particulièrement raffiné. Elles ont confirmé l’intensité des échanges commerciaux entre la Macédoine et les autres régions du monde grec.

Les chaussures sur la promenade du Danube créée par Gyula Pauer et Can Togay, est un mémorial sur la rive du Danube à Budapest, Hongrie. Il est situé sur le côté Pest de la villeà la fin de Szechenyi Street, à environ 300 m au sud de l'édifice du Parlement hongrois.

Les chaussures sont un mémorial pour les Juifs de Budapest qui est tombé victime de lamilice des Croix fléchées et dépeint leurs chaussures laissées sur la rive où ils sont tombés dans la rivière après avoir été abattu pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il est une représentation émouvante de l'un des plus sombres événements du monde.

If I Can’t Dance proudly presents the first restaging of the play Five Sisters (1982) by Guy de Cointet at Frascati WG in Amsterdam on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October 2011.
Five Sisters is a performance that oozes with the West Coast culture of health and beauty. It presents the story of five sisters, who busy themselves with the problems and pleasures of modern life on a Sunday afternoon. The California sun provokes their reactions, emotions and moods. With Five Sisters, de Cointet explored the affective wellbeing of women who have changing, restless, encounters in their parental home, discussing issues of wardrobe, suntan, health, exotic holidays, work and painting. Through a combination of minimalist and baroque elements, the artist plays with the construction of individuality, the expression of emotion and the various interpretations of language.
This restaging of Five Sisters is the result of a research conducted by art historian Marie de Brugerolle, as part of If I Can’t Dance’s programme Performance in Residence, and addresses questions around the idea of ‘making Five Sisters anew’.

Légende de la danse, Mikhaïl Baryshnikov, 63 ans, également comédien et chorégraphe, se produira au Théâtre national de Chaillot du 8 au 17 septembre dans un spectacle inédit en France alliant théâtre, danse et vidéo.

Invité d'honneur à nouveau des "Étés de la danse", "Misha" Baryshnikov revient à Paris pour dix représentations d'une adaptation scénique de la nouvelle "In Paris" écrite en 1940 par l'écrivain russe Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), prix Nobel de littérature en 1933.

D'origine russe naturalisé américain, Baryshnikov partage l'affiche avec la comédienne russe Anna Sinyakina.

Jouée en russe surtitré, "In Paris" est une production du Baryshnikov Arts Center et du Dmitry Krymov Laboratory, en association avec la Russian Korjaamo Century Foundation et le Théâtre Korjaamo d'Helsinki.

"C'est le récit de deux émigrants russes qui se rencontrent par hasard à Paris, en 1930. Lui est un ancien général de l'Armée blanche russe, elle une belle jeune femme, de loin sa cadette. Ils tombent éperdument amoureux, mais le temps qui les unit leur est compté. Lorsque l'un décède, le second découvre alors ce qu'est la véritable solitude", expliquent les organisateurs des Etés de la danse, manifestation annuelle qui propose des rendez-vous à Paris avec les plus grandes compagnies de danse du monde.

L'an dernier, Mikhaïl Baryshnikov avait déjà participé aux Etés de la danse à Chaillot en interprétant la "Sarabande" chorégraphiée pour lui par Jerome Robbins.

Esthète, dandy...si ces épithètes n’étaient pas aujourd’hui galvaudés, ils définiraient parfaitement la vie et l’œuvre de Marc Raynal, qui sous plusieurs noms de plume, (Maud Molyneux, Louella Interim, Dora Forbes), a animé pendant près de dix ans les pages mode et cinéma de Libération aux côtés de Serge Daney, Michel Cressole et Gérard Lefort. Invited back for Les Étés de la Danse in collaboration with the Theatre National de Chaillot, Mikhail Baryshnikov returns to Paris with an original project which combines theater, dance, music and video.

The show is a stage adaptation of the new In Paris written in 1940 by the Russian writer Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933. It is a production of the Baryshnikov Arts Center & Laboratory of Dmitry Krymov, in association with the Century Foundation and the Russian Korjaamo Theatre in Helsinki.

In the new Paris is the story of two Russian immigrants who meet by chance in Paris in 1930. He is a former General of the Russian White Army, she a beautiful young woman, by far his junior. They fall madly in love, but the time between them are numbered. When one dies, the other discovers what true solitude.

Valery Koshlyakov thinks not in categories of time, but in categories of cultural spaces, where emptiness is more important than presence since it preserves within itself the spirit of the time, zeitgeist, which the artist then relays to the viewer. On giant pieces of corrugated cardboard, Koshlyakov creates monumental images of past grandeur, which amaze with their compositional rigor and the nobility of the fated fading. Like all monumentalists, he is totalitarian. The subjects of his paintings are Pompeian frescoes, Constructivist Moscow, Greek, Roman, and Stalinist architecture, Gothic cathedrals, monuments from both the Renaissance and contemporaneity. His painting on corrugated cardboard pretends to be a masterpiece from epochs past found accidentally in the dumpster. Trash, under his brush, turns into an object of reflection and becomes priceless.
